PSALM 23

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I am thoroughly equipped with everything I need.
2 He lets me rest in lush green fields and leads me to calm waters.
3 He renews my spirit and leads me to walk in paths that are right, for the sake of his great name.
4 Even when I am walking through the darkest and most dangerous valley, I will not be afraid because I know you are close beside me. Your rod and staff guide me and bring comfort and support.
5 You set up a feast for me right in front of my enemies. You treat me as an honored guest, pouring oil on my head, and my cup is so full it spills over.
6 I am confident that your kindness and love will be with me every single day of my life, and I will live in the Lord's house for eternity.

JAMES 2

Do Not Engage in Favoritism

1 As followers of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, my brothers and sisters, showing favoritism should not be part of our lives.
2 Imagine if someone enters your gathering dressed in extravagant clothes and flashy jewelry, and at the same time, a poor person in worn-out and dirty clothes also enters.
3 If you give preferential treatment to the one in fine clothes, offering them the best seat, but tell the poor person to either stand or sit on the floor,
4 are you not discriminating against specific groups of people because of the evil thoughts you entertained in your mind?

5 Listen closely: Do you not realize that God intended for those labeled as poor by worldly standards to possess a wealth of faith and inherit the kingdom He has promised to those who love Him?
6 But look at you; you have dishonored the poor. Do you not see that wealthy people are the ones who are oppressing you and dragging you into court?
7 Do you not understand that these are the very same people who slander the honorable name of Jesus, the One you chose to follow when you came to true faith?

8 If you truly adhere to the royal command found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are living correctly.
9 However, if you practice favoritism, you sin and are convicted by God's law as a lawbreaker.
10 Whoever obeys the entire law but fails in one aspect is guilty of violating all of it.
11 For the same One who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and behave as those who will be judged by the law that brings freedom,
13 because judgment will be merciless to anyone who has not shown mercy. Mercy conquers over judgment every time.

Connection Between Faith and Deeds

14 What benefit is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but lacks actions? Do you think that kind of faith will save them?
15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking daily food,
16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep yourself warm, and be well fed," but you do not provide for their practical needs, what good is that?
17 Similarly, faith, if it does not manifest in actions, is dead by itself.

18 But someone might argue, "You have faith, and I have actions."

Show me your faith absent of actions, and I will show you my faith through my actions.
19 You believe that God is one; good for you. Even the demons believe that—and tremble with fear.

20 Do you foolishly need proof that faith without actions is a waste of time?
21 Consider how our forefather Abraham was considered righteous through what he did when he was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac on the altar.
22 It is evident that his faith and his actions worked together, complementing each other, with his faith reaching its completion through what he did by his actions.
23 So, the passage, "Abraham put his trust in God, and it was recognized as righteousness," came to fulfillment through his actions, and he was given the title of God's friend.
24 It becomes clear then, that an individual is declared righteous by the actions they perform, not only by faith alone.

25 Similarly, was Rahab, who was a known prostitute, not also seen to be righteous due to her actions when she hospitably received the spies and helped them escape by a different path?
26 Just as the body without the spirit is dead, so too faith without actions is dead.
